Direct thermal labels have a heat-sensitive chemical layer applied to a paper or synthetic base, which activates when exposed to heat. Over time, these labels may fade or develop a brown tint and can turn completely black if exposed to heat or strong sunlight.
Compared to thermal transfer labels, direct thermal labels fade more quickly. Thermal transfer labels, designed for use with thermal transfer printers, offer greater durability. This method utilizes a thermal ribbon, where heat from the printhead transfers ink onto the label.
Thermal transfer labels are ideal for applications requiring long-lasting prints, such as:
- Warehouse shelf labels
- Inventory identification labels
- Asset tags
- Outdoor labeling
- Freezer applications
- Chemical labels
- Laboratory labels
